Lacquer vs. Polyurethane vs. Shellac: Choosing a Wood Finish
The practical differences between the three finishes you're most likely to be offered, and which one suits how a piece will actually be used.

In short Lacquer, polyurethane, and shellac differ mainly in hardness, repairability, and appearance. Polyurethane is generally the most resistant of the three to water and heat, but it usually has to be sanded back before recoating. A catalyzed lacquer — the kind used in most modern refinishing work — closes most of that durability gap; an older-style nitrocellulose lacquer does not, and stays softer against water and heat. Lacquer looks clearer at the same thickness than polyurethane and, in its catalyzed form, can usually be repaired by scuffing and recoating without stripping the piece. Shellac is the softest of the three and marks easily from water and alcohol, but has the warmest depth and can be spot-repaired with its own solvent. For most furniture that gets daily use, a catalyzed lacquer is the practical middle; for heavy-wear and commercial surfaces, polyurethane; for antiques with an original shellac finish, shellac.
Most people choosing a finish are choosing between durability and appearance without being told that repairability is the third axis — and often the one that matters most five years later.
Start with how the piece is used
A dining table that hosts dinner every night has different requirements from a display cabinet in a hallway. Before comparing finishes, it’s worth being honest about exposure: standing water, heat, direct sun, and how often the surface gets wiped down. Almost every finish decision follows from that answer rather than from the wood species or the style of the piece.
Hardness is not the whole story
Polyurethane wins outright on resistance, and a straight nitrocellulose lacquer gives up real ground to it. But a modern catalyzed (conversion) lacquer — the kind most furniture is actually finished in today — closes most of that gap, and the hardest finish is not automatically the best one anyway, because a polyurethane surface that does eventually get damaged is harder to repair invisibly — the usual fix involves sanding an area back and re-coating it, which is a bigger job than it sounds on a large panel.
Catalyzed lacquer gives up a narrow margin of resistance and gets back a great deal of repairability. A scratch or a worn edge can often be scuffed and recoated so the repair disappears into the surrounding finish. Over the life of a piece that gets real use, that difference tends to matter more than the remaining gap in hardness.
Where shellac still belongs
Shellac is the softest of the three and marks from water, alcohol, and heat more readily than either film finish. It is also the warmest-looking, and it has a property neither of the others has: it dissolves in its own solvent, so a damaged area can be re-amalgamated into the existing finish rather than patched.
That makes it the right answer for a specific case — a piece that already carries an original shellac finish worth keeping, where matching the existing material matters more than maximum durability. It is the wrong answer for a hard-used dining table, and worth saying plainly: our workshop does not offer French polishing, the traditional hand-applied shellac technique.
A reasonable default
If you want one rule: a catalyzed lacquer for furniture in daily domestic use, polyurethane where the surface will see water, heat, or commercial cleaning, and shellac only where a piece already has it. Any of the three is a defensible choice for a given piece, and the honest answer usually depends on details a photograph will show.
